A Timeless Treasure
Diamond Education
At So Sweet Jewelers, we believe every diamond tells a story—of love, celebration, and legacy. Whether you’re shopping for an engagement ring, a gift, or a personal treasure, understanding the intricacies of a diamond helps you make a confident, informed decision. Here’s your essential guide to the brilliance behind every stone.
Diamond Anatomy & Cut Quality
Every diamond is more than just sparkle. Its brilliance is a result of precise craftsmanship and natural beauty. To truly appreciate a diamond, it helps to understand its basic anatomy:
Understanding the 4 C’s of Diamond Shopping
When choosing a diamond, the 4 C’s—Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat—serve as the global standard for evaluating quality. Here’s what they mean:
Cut: The Sparkle Factor
Of all the 4 C’s, cut has the biggest impact on a diamond’s appearance. Even with perfect clarity and color, a poorly cut diamond will look dull.
The cut is not just about shape—it’s about how well the diamond’s facets interact with light. A well-cut diamond offers brilliance, fire (flashes of color), and scintillation (sparkle when moved). We only offer diamonds with superior cut grades, ensuring maximum radiance.
Our curated diamonds are meticulously cut to bring out the best in every stone, from traditional round brilliants to oval, princess, and cushion shapes.
Diamond Cut Descriptions
Excellent: Exceptional brilliance and fire.
Very Good: Slightly less brilliance, great value.
Good: Noticeable reduction in sparkle.
Fair/Poor: Dull appearance; not recommended.
Clarity: The Purity of the Stone
Clarity refers to the presence of natural inclusions or blemishes inside or on the surface of a diamond.
We hand-select diamonds that strike a balance between clarity and value—many imperfections are microscopic and invisible without magnification.
Diamond Clarity Descriptions
FL (Flawless): No internal or external imperfections under 10x magnification.
IF (Internally Flawless): Only surface blemishes.
VVS1 & VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Inclusions are extremely difficult to see.
VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Minor inclusions, difficult to detect.
SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions are visible under magnification, and possibly to the naked eye.
I1, I2, I3 (Included): Obvious inclusions, affecting brilliance.
Color: The Hue of Beauty
The less color a diamond has, the more rare and valuable it is. Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown tint).
Diamond Color Descriptions
D–F (Colorless): Exceptional quality, icy brilliance.
G–J (Near Colorless): Great value, appears colorless to most eyes.
K–M (Faint Color): Noticeable warmth; can be beautiful in vintage-style settings.
N–Z: Visible color; less desirable for traditional white diamonds.
Carat: Size and Weight
Carat is the measurement of a diamond’s weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, but carat weight alone doesn’t determine beauty.
A well-cut 0.90 carat diamond may look larger—and shine brighter—than a poorly cut 1.00 carat.
At So Sweet Jewelers, we believe that buying a diamond should be personal, not overwhelming.
We are here to help you navigate every facet—cut, clarity, color, and carat—so you find a diamond that’s perfect for your budget and your story.
